David Carson-- Web Designer Post

David Carson is an American graphic designer who uses a lot of typography in his work. He is the art director of the magazine Ray Gun, which is a rock and roll magazine. He is known for his grunge style and he is one of the mot influential graphic designers of the 1990s. He found his own studio in 1995 and has done some work with Pepsi Cola, Ray ban, Nike, Microsoft, Budweiser, Georgio Armani, NBC, MGM Studios, Nine Inch Nails, and many many more. I really liked this article, but I think the most interesting section for me was section 5, when he talks about public spacing and the need to believe in a god. I think it was one of the articles that caught me off guard the most. Saying that the only way one can make a public space is to believe in any or a god is interesting, especially since it is a topic of religion.

Project 2

So here is my project. I decided to do a vector image of my brother and make it a type of advertisement or a "meme" relating to his spiffy look and his love for soccer. 

Logo Remake

For my logo, I decided to do the logo for my favorite Portuguese soft drink, Sumol. Sumol is a pretty big company over in Portugal, so I thought it would be fun and unique to do their logo.

And here is the remake. I tried to make the letters look like they were being pushed away by wind or something.

My Progress on Illustrator

So here is the original portrait that I am doing. I decided to choose the photo of my younger brother because this photo is very focused on one big thing, which is his face.

And here is my progress so far! I wanted to get most of the basic shapes done. So now all I need to worry about are the details.

Artist Post: Pascal Dombis

When reading the article for class, I came across Pascal Dombis's Antisana II and was immediately intrigued. Pascal Dombis is a digital artist from France. He was born in 1965. He studied at Insa University in Lyon, France where he got a degree in engineering. After this, he studied at Tuft's University, where he picked up his computer art skills, using computers and algorithms in his art. Here is some of his artwork:

I think what I find the most interesting about his work is all of his geometric patterns and use of lines. It's fun and vibrant and original. The twists that he's able to create with lines in Antisana II is honestly very unique and probably really hard to do. He really balances all of the colors well in Antisana II and in Irrational Geometrics. 

I added RightRong and Eurasia in this because they are a little bit different from his works. The similarities between these two is the use of words and lines all together. I think that the layering for each word and each line was very well spread out. He takes drawing straight lines into a whole other level with his works of art. 

Artist Post: Pedro Terrinha

I've been slightly obsessed with this artist for a while, so I thought it would be appropriate to use him for one of my posts. Pedro Terrinha is a photographer from Lisbon, Portugal. You can find some of his photographs here. He describes his photography/ artist style as "colorful, dreamy, and spiritual." The types of cameras that he uses are a Canon 550D, Yashica D, Zenit TTL, and a Pentax Spotmatic SPII. He uses Photoshop CS6, Apophysis, and Fractal Explorer for editing his photographs to make the viewer capture the dreaminess of his photos. Here are just a few of my favorite photos:

What I like most about Terrinha's photographs is that he takes something real and turns it into something dreamy. He doesn't necessarily make it unreal, but he enhances a lot of things, such as the sparkles in the flower photo above and the vibrant colors in all of his sunset photos. He really takes nature into a whole other perspective when taking and editing these photographs. It makes the viewer feel like they are in real life, but in some sort of fantasy land at the same time as well. The majority of his photos are also based on nature, and I am personally a huge fan of nature photography.

I think this idea behind his work could also be taken negatively. Since it does seem so unrealistic, people can take this as fake photography. Although I don't like editing photos that I take so much, I think it's important that some people are into it. It makes photography a little it more interesting, and I think that this type of editing is what makes Terrinha an original artist.

Before and After Photos

My Collage of My Classmates' Scans

This is my first experience ever with Photoshop, so I did the best that I could in combining all of these scans together. But here it is: 

I think the most difficult part about this was trying to find a theme. It was also a bit difficult to find out where I should have placed the items and figuring out how they should be used in the photo. I really like how I was able to incorporate Kati's star painting into the photo on only the white parts of Alex's scanned photo. And to keep up with the star theme, I used some of my glow in the dark stars from my own scans. Here are the items I used from each person:

The Scannings of Random Items

I actually enjoyed working on this assignment. To me, it was fun to think of all of the random yet cool things I have that can be turned into a work of art. Here are the photos of the random items I scanned:

Feather Necklace

I actually got this necklace yesterday from one of my friends who didn't want it. I thought that the feather in the middle had turned a simple necklace into something bold, but still down to earth. I really like how the beads reflect onto the white as well.

Pink Scarf

This is definitely one of my favorite items that I scanned. This scarf was given to me by my grandmother and I just love the texture of it and the many different colors incorporated in it. 

Chai Tea Bag

I think of all my scans, this is the most unique. I don't know how I came up with the idea of ripping a tea bag open, but I thought that the tea bits would look really cool spread out.

Crotchet Shirt

This is a section of a crotchet shirt that I have. I actually wore it on class the other day. Crotchet is very intricate and I thought it would be pretty cool to have a close up of the design.

 

"Fuzzy Grass"

I found this "fuzzy grass" outside of my residence while talking on the phone. I really like the texture on the top of it and I thought it would be perfect to show.

Glow in the Dark Stars

Originally, I had these glow in the dark stars with just a white background. I realized that since these are glow in the dark stars, I might as well add a black background regardless of whether or not the scan would make it glow or not.

Gold Bracelets

This is one of my favorite set of bracelets that I have. The fact that it's not entirely gold makes it very simple. I decided to spread it out like this to show some layering on each bracelet. I was curious to see it the layering would be very noticeable in the scan.

Leaves

This originally had been a photo had been a photo of four leaves, but I decided to crop this one bit. I really like the closeup of these two leaves, especially since the one on the right looks 3D instead of a flat leaf.

Negatives

My friend, as an art major, suggested that I use some of her film from past pictures for this assignment. I originally had three film strips, but I really liked how the angle and the coloring of this particular one turned out.   

Pillow Case

This is a close up of one pillow I brought to school this year. I really liked the design and the bright colors draws the audience into the photo.

Portugal Flag

Of course, because I am so proud of being Portuguese, I had to put a Portuguese flag up. I didn't want to just put a flag, so I bent the red part of the flag just a little bit to show some layering.

Pixel Drawing

Here is my first attempt at making a pixel drawing for this class. Since I love the ocean so much I just decided to draw sea creatures.
